Two years ago Digger, my son, and I were
hunting with my wife's brother in south Florida. He is a
farmer/rancher and his place is loaded with turkeys and we are
the only ones who hunt there. He has 2000+ - acres of grove,
pasture and cypress/oak swamp. We hunted early that morning and
decided to go to the edge of the pasture to look and listen for a
bird. It was still real foggy when we got there about 9:30 AM.
When we walked out to the edge we saw 2 turkeys run so I cut and
cackled to them real hard, quick and loud. There was no response
from them but a gobbler double gobbled at my call so we ran over
to a small oak tree and got set up. I called again and he triple
gobbled and came on the run. Now I could see him at about 60
yards or so. I called again and he double gobbled then came on a
dead run toward us and stopped at 30 yards with his neck
stretched up looking for that hot hen. I waited for my son to
shoot
but he did not
so after 30 seconds or so I shot
and killed the bird. I asked why he did not shoot and he said he
could not see the bird because his glasses were fogged up too bad
to see from the fog, heat, running and his heart beating so fast.
We got a good laugh about that and we still laugh about it today.
The Osceola weighed 18 1/2 lbs. had 1 1/2" spurs and had an
11 inch beard. Digger did get a bird the next week here at home.
